ARCA's Sloth Initiative

The ARCA Sloth Initiative focuses on protecting sloths and their rainforest habitat in the Peruvian Amazon. Sloths are among the most recognizable animals of the Amazon, yet they face increasing threats from deforestation, habitat fragmentation, electrocution from power lines, and illegal wildlife trafficking.

Through rescue, rehabilitation, research, and habitat protection, ARCA aims to safeguard sloths while using them as a flagship species to promote broader rainforest conservation.

Why Sloths?

Sloths are highly vulnerable to habitat disturbance because they rely almost entirely on connected forest canopy to survive. When forests are cleared or fragmented, sloths are forced to descend to the ground where they become vulnerable to predators, vehicle strikes, and human conflict.

Despite their popularity worldwide, very little conservation work specifically targets wild sloth populations in Peru. Protecting sloths also helps preserve the forest ecosystem they depend on.

Core Program Goals

 Rescue & Rehabilitation

ARCA will respond to sloths that are injured, orphaned, or confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Animals will receive veterinary care and rehabilitation with the goal of releasing them back into protected forest.

 Habitat & Canopy Protection

The project will focus on maintaining forest canopy connectivity, helping sloths move safely through their natural habitat. This includes identifying critical habitat corridors and promoting conservation of sloth habitat.

 Research & Monitoring

ARCA will conduct field research to better understand sloth populations in the region. This may include population surveys, habitat studies, and monitoring rehabilitated sloths after release.

 Community Education

Working with local communities, ARCA will promote awareness about sloths and the importance of protecting rainforest ecosystems. Education programs will help reduce wildlife trafficking and encourage coexistence with wildlife.

Long-Term Vision

The ARCA Sloth Conservation Project aims to become one of the leading programs protecting sloths in the Peruvian Amazon while helping build the most advanced wildlife rescue and conservation facility in the region.

By protecting sloths, ARCA will also protect the forests and biodiversity that sustain countless other Amazonian species.
